Games, Growth, and Good Vibes: A Recap of the August OLxD L&D Hangout

On Saturday, August 30, 2025, OLxD hosted its second Learning & Development Hangout of the year in Lagos, Nigeria, with the theme “Designing a Corporate Learning Academy: From Vision to Business Impact.” The session was held in partnership with Purple Academy of Wema Bank, a globally recognized leader in corporate learning and culture transformation.
This edition drew together a lively mix of professionals — from senior HR and L&D practitioners to those aspiring to transition fully into the learning space. Over 100 participants gathered, with some traveling from neighboring states just to attend. The room was abuzz with curiosity, excitement, and a shared hunger for insight. “It was encouraging seeing so many L&D professionals come out to engage and learn on a Saturday,” one attendee shared. “I loved the energy in the room.”
The experience kicked off with the signature OLxD blend of games and networking. Participants got to relax, connect, and have fun before diving into more structured group discussions. One of the highlights was a breakout challenge where participants, grouped into small teams, were asked to design a corporate learning academy for a 500-person company. In 15 minutes, each group presented a brand name, key focus areas, and a measurable way to prove business impact. The creativity and confidence in those presentations were both impressive and energizing — a live example of collaborative learning at its best.
The central learning session was facilitated virtually by Oluwaferanmi Owolabi, Vice Chancellor of Purple Academy. Although remote, her presence filled the room with clarity, confidence, and warmth. Participants remained glued to their seats throughout. One of them remarked, “Feranmi’s remarks were great. Everyone handled logistics well for her to present remotely, and she did a good job engaging the room.” Her presentation walked us through how Purple Academy was built — not just as a training department but as a strategic vehicle for business growth.
She emphasized the importance of starting with the right questions, designing with empathy, and building learning systems that align with business goals, culture, and people. Her breakdown of design thinking in L&D — empathize, define, ideate, prototype, test — struck a deep chord with attendees. She also introduced a powerful framework using the acronym ACADEMY: Align with strategy, Create identity, Apply design thinking, Drive culture and change, Engage people, Measure impact, and You transform. The audience responded with active note-taking, nods of agreement, and thoughtful questions during the Q&A that followed.
The entire event felt intentional — from the content to the vibe. OLxD’s choice of Purple Academy as a host wasn’t accidental. Earlier this year, Purple Academy was awarded the GlobalCCU Gold Award in Paris, naming it the Best Corporate University in the World for Driving Culture Initiatives. Their warm, modern, and vibrant space not only served as a perfect backdrop but reflected the values of innovation and excellence the day was centered around.
The post-event feedback has been equally inspiring. One participant said, “The deep dive into structural alignment, design thinking, and prototyping was illuminating. I was reminded that learning must never be a fixed construct — it should evolve with creativity and relevance.” Another attendee reflected, “Sometimes, growth isn’t about convenience; it’s about showing up despite the excuses. And I’m glad I did.”
